From Zero to SQL: A Hands-On Query Writing 1-day Workshop

SQL is the universal language of data, and the most important skill for working with relational databases. This one-day workshop is designed for beginners and anyone who needs a strong foundation in writing SQL queries. Through a mix of instruction and hands-on exercises, you’ll go from understanding the basics of databases to writing queries that retrieve, filter, and analyze data.

We’ll start with the fundamentals: how relational databases are structured, the role of data types, and how SQL commands work. Then we’ll dive into practical query writing: selecting, filtering, sorting, joining tables, and using aggregations to answer real analytical questions. You’ll also explore control flow logic, learn how indexes impact performance, and practice writing clear, efficient queries.

The workshop uses Microsoft SQL Server for demonstrations and labs, but the concepts, syntax, and problem-solving approach you’ll learn are transferable to most major database systems, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Oracle.
